10 Great Volunteer Events in Houston for Spring 2020

New decade, new habits.  Get involved in your community this spring by donating your time to an organization in need.  We have compiled 10 Houston volunteer events recommended to us by our friends and colleagues.

1. Free Wheels, Bike Repair Day – February 1, 2020
Through the generosity of Houstonians and the resourcefulness of volunteers, Free Wheels is dedicated to giving those in need their freedom back by giving them mobility.  Free Wheels give used and donated bikes to provide people with the freedom to pursue a new life. 2. Lockhart Read Houston Read HISD – February 3rd, 2020

Similar to Real Men Read, Read Houston Read is open to all of the community.  The program aims to reverse the cycle of low literacy and get every student to an on level by the third grade.  Volunteers will primarily be reading to and engaging with children to hopefully impact their future successes. 3. Books for Development, Book Sorting Event – February 15, 2020

Books for Development is a non-profit created to help developing countries by creating libraries, community, school and mobile, through volunteers and donated books.  For this specific event, they will be sorting and boxing books to be sent out. To learn more or sign up, click here.

4. Thompson Real Men Read HISD – February 20, 2020

Designed to support HISD’s Literacy By 3 movement, Real Men Read assists in having every child to an on-grade reading level by the end of third grade.  You can join the community wide-effort by becoming a reading MENtor, and provide a positive male role model for the youth.  If you are interested in the program or would like to become a MENtor, click here to view their volunteer opportunities.

5. Kreinhop Elementary, Superhero Carnival – February 22, 2020

Kreinhop Elementary is looking for individuals to volunteer for various positions to help make their Superhero Carnival a success.  The primary volunteer positions they are in need of are volunteers to come dressed as superheroes take photos with the children, volunteers for the silent auction, and volunteers to help in planning and day of the event.  Middle school students, high school students, and parents or teachers are all welcomed to sign up. 6. Galveston Bay Foundation, Trash Bash – March 28, 2020

To support the preservation, protection, and enhancement of Galveston Bay through hands-on volunteers is the mission of the Galveston Bay Foundation Volunteer Program.  This coming March, The Galveston Bay Foundation is hosting a trash bash to collect trash and recyclable materials from various cleanup sites. 7. Houston Food Bank, Empty Bowls – April 4, 2020

Empty Bowls Houston is a grassroots effort implemented by collaborating organizations of the Houston Food Bank and the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft to feed the hungry in Houston communities.  Last year the initiative received over 1,500 bowls, ranging in media from clay to metal. 8. Citizens’ Environmental Coalition, Earth Day Houston – April 19, 2020

Citizens’ Environmental Coalition, an organization dedicated to educating and collaborating on environmental issues in Houston, is seeking volunteers for Houston’s 50th Earth Day.  Volunteers will primarily be serving as Recycling Ambassador for hour and a half shifts. 9. Corridor Rescue, Wags & Wagers – April 24, 2020

Join Corridor Rescue for Wags and Wagers, a Casino Night event sure to provide fun for everyone!  Your support of Corridor Rescue Inc. allows them to continue their mission to rescue abandoned and homeless animals from the streets of Houston in an area dubbed the “Corridor of Cruelty.”  Visit the event page to sign up or learn more.

10. Bike MS, MS 150 * Houston to College Station – May 2-3, 2020

Touted as the largest fundraising bike series in the world, each year, Bike MS cyclists ride together to change the world for people with MS.  This coming May, team captain, Audrey, is seeking volunteers to help Team Audrey’s Heroes support the Texas MS150 at the LaGrange team tent or at the team tent in College Station at Kyle Field.  Any funds that are raised will go directly toward treating and eventually curing MS.
